Dow drops 1.18% and S&P 500 falls 0.58% as U.S. stocks decline

• The S&P 500 fell 0.58% to 7,673.52, the Nasdaq 100 slipped 0.12% to 29,507.701, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1.18% to 52,786.07, and the Russell 2000 declined 0.52% to 2,960.204. All four major U.S. indices finished lower on the session, with the Dow the weakest.
• The CBOE VIX rose 0.22 points, or 1.4%, to 15.94. A reading below 20 typically signals a relatively calm volatility regime, but the uptick shows modest caution after the Dow's 1.18% drop and broad equity declines. The volatility gauge remains subdued.
• The 10-year Treasury yield added 2bp to 4.80%, while the 2-year yield also rose 2bp to 4.39%, leaving the 2s10s spread at 41bp. The 5-year yield rose 3bp to 4.57% and the 30-year yield added 1bp to 5.25%. Yields increased across the curve in the session.
• The CNN Business Fear & Greed Index read 39.5, in the 'fear' tier, as of September 9. On a 0-100 scale, readings below 50 signal fear; this defensive reading aligns with falling major indices, rising VIX and firm bond yields.
• Among notable stocks, Tesla jumped 3.98% to $368.16 and Broadcom rose 2.98% to $368.56, the two biggest gainers. On the downside, Eli Lilly fell 2.21% to $1,123.91 and NVIDIA dropped 2.01% to $225.73, the two largest decliners in the list.
• Key stories included a U.S. import ban on a slew of Canadian goods as the trade war escalated. Bond yields were in focus, with reports that rising yields are squeezing equity risk premiums across developed markets. Google also announced a record €13 billion AI investment in Finland.
